Arbor Oaks Terrace Memory Care Newberg | Local Leader: Andrew Aman

Memory Care in Newberg, Oregon

Most families come to memory care the same way. A parent starts leaving the stove on, or gets lost on a street they have driven for thirty years, and an adult child realizes home is no longer safe. Then comes a scramble to understand a system nobody prepared them for — what memory care actually is, what it costs, and how it differs from assisted living.

Arbor Oaks Terrace on Werth Boulevard is Newberg’s dedicated memory care community — built exclusively for residents living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, rather than an assisted living building with a memory wing attached. It is operated by Frontier Senior Living and serves families across Newberg, Dundee, Sherwood, Wilsonville, McMinnville and greater Yamhill County.

The person families talk to first is Andrew Aman, who came to Arbor Oaks after seventeen years in the Gervais School District. Here is his profile, part of my ongoing Local Leader series.

From the Principal’s Office to Memory Care

Andrew Aman spent seventeen years in the Gervais School District — eleven of them teaching middle school, then three as vice principal and three more as head principal. That is a career built almost entirely on two things: talking to families during difficult moments, and being the person who explains what happens next.

In March of 2026 he moved into senior living, and he now handles admissions and family outreach at Arbor Oaks Terrace here in Newberg. In his own words, his job is “helping families navigate important care decisions with compassion, trust, and understanding.”

If you have never had to make this particular call, it is worth saying plainly what it involves. Someone — usually an adult child — realizes a parent is no longer safe at home. There is guilt in it, and urgency, and usually very little knowledge of how any of this works. The first person you talk to at a memory care community shapes that whole experience. Having a former principal in that chair is not a small thing.

About the Community

Arbor Oaks Terrace sits on Werth Boulevard in Newberg and is designed exclusively for memory care — not an assisted living community with a memory wing, but a building built around dementia care throughout. It is operated by Frontier Senior Living, which runs communities across the Northwest.

Their programming runs on Frontier’s Spark® program, which draws on Montessori methods and is organized around residents’ own choices and independence rather than a fixed daily schedule. In practice that shows up as resident-led committees — a welcoming committee for new arrivals, a gardening committee whose produce turns up in meals, and a cooking committee.

  • Round-the-clock care for Alzheimer’s and dementia-related illness
  • Specialized dining options
  • Art therapy, arts and crafts, baking classes
  • Bird watching and gardening groups
  • Beauty salon, religious services, weekly housekeeping and linen service
  • Pet friendly

What Families Say

“My mom is in memory care at Arbor Oaks and feel she is in the finest of memory care homes. We couldn’t ask for a more homey atmosphere and the staff truly loves the residents.” — Romona Youngquist, Google review

You can read the full set of reviews on their Google listing, and I would encourage any family to do exactly that, along with touring more than one community before deciding.

Why I’m Featuring Andrew

A good share of my work is with people moving a parent, downsizing after a spouse dies, or selling a family home because someone needs more care than the house can give them. Those conversations and this one tend to arrive together.

I am not qualified to tell anyone which memory care community is right for their family, and I would be suspicious of any realtor who claimed otherwise. What I can tell you is that Andrew is local, he is easy to reach, and he spent seventeen years in a job that was largely about sitting across from worried families and being straight with them. When you are at the very beginning of this and do not know what questions to ask, that is the person you want to call first.

Tour more than one place. Ask hard questions. But if you need somewhere to start, Andrew will pick up.

Memory Care in Newberg: Common Questions

What is the difference between memory care and assisted living?

Assisted living supports people who need help with daily tasks but are cognitively intact. Memory care is built specifically for dementia — secured entries and exits, staff trained in dementia behaviors, and programming designed around cognitive decline. Arbor Oaks Terrace is memory care only, so the whole building operates that way rather than one wing of it.

Where is Arbor Oaks Terrace located?

317 Werth Blvd, Newberg, OR 97132 — just off Highway 99W on the north side of town. The community phone is (503) 538-2288, and tours can be arranged at (971) 290-4487.

How do I know when it is time for memory care?

There is no single answer, but the common triggers are safety — wandering, falls, stove or medication mistakes — and caregiver exhaustion. Most families wait longer than they should. Touring a community before you are in crisis costs nothing and makes the eventual decision far less frantic.

What should I ask on a tour?

Ask about staff-to-resident ratio and staff turnover, how they handle a resident who becomes agitated, what happens if care needs increase, exactly what the monthly fee covers and what is billed separately, and whether you can visit unannounced. Tour more than one community. The differences become obvious once you have seen two or three.
