Just finished up with the Aug 22, 2024 Short term Rental listening session
The two major Opinions:
Pros: These are private homes and people should be free to do what they choose
– STR’s bring in money and tourists into the city
– The benefit specific individuals by allowing long distance commuters and families to travel between Newberg and other cities. (including mine )
Cons: housing is expensive and too much housing is lost to STR
– There was much discussion regarding the loss of community. Specifically in the Northern downtown / GFU sector. “The neighborhood is not feeling like a neighborhood. ” was a common feeling
– Density is important. Most people do not mind if STR are spread out, but there are community feel issues when 3-4 are on one block.
– Concerns with out of state investors snatching up homes (although I would be interested in seeing the evidence/numbers)
– Recommend looking at capping the number of short term rentals one person/entity can have
– Multiple STR’s are not in compliance with Newberg taxes, or holding a business license.
In summary I felt the discussion, questions and opinions were thoughtful and balanced, and I trust the STR council will make a good decision when it comes to any new rules/regulations on Newberg Short Term Rentals
Any other thoughts? Leave them below.
