Newberg’s Short Term Rental Rules

As of last check the City of Newberg has 74 homes being used as short term rentals. For a city of 9,200 households in this is just under 1% of the homes are being used as STR’s.

Based on community input, and the feel that Short Term Rentals are getting out of hand,  the planning commission recommended looking into a temporary moratorium on Short term rentals.

A few months later the City counsel established the short term rental Ad-hoc committee. Which presented their recommendations in March 20204.

So far nothing yet has been implemented, but their major recommendations are below:

  1. Consider implementing a cap on STRs to 2% of total Newberg Households
  2. Amend Newberg municipal code to make STR zoning more restrictive and prevent STR permits to transfer when a home sells
  3. Implement a good neighbor program along with enhanced enforcement of STR complaints.

Let me know if you are interested in seeing the Committee’s brief or Newberg STR requirements and I’m happy to send it.

There is also a really good heat map of current STRs in Newberg on the City’s website.

What do you think? How do we balance property owners rights with the rights of a family friendly neighborhood?
